Can’t We All Just Get Along?

We’ve been at this humanity thing for thousands of years now and still haven’t figured it out. What ever happened to all those theories on evolution? Guess they don’t apply to the ‘getting along with others’ gene. All this time and still so much killing, fighting, and arguing. All these advancements in technology and education, yet none in human nature.

Our news is full of images of the war machine gobbling up more and more victims, one man’s greed causing the starvation of countless fellow men, riots and lives torn apart.

Then again, with 7 billion of us roaming around and weapons of mass destruction ready to finish us all off, it’s a wonder we’re all still here to not get along with each other.

  1. Clearly, we have not been able to “just get along”, more’s the pity. But then evolution was a battle with the strongest surviving, whether they be animal or plant, so perhaps it is just the way we are.

Now, some say that we’ve reached the end of our evolutionary path because science and medicine allows the weak to survive as well, so perhaps there is hope for “just getting along” after all. ))

    • Ah, some silver lining to this dark cloud- we do help the weak survive and even thrive at times. And ‘the weak’ can help restore our humanity as we turn away- even momentarily- from our own survival instincts to stop and help another.

  2. You make a very good point about our evolution (or should I say lack thereof) We do not learn from what’s gone before.

    • As a human race, it appears we haven’t progressed in the things that matter most. However, there are those shining moments when individual acts of kindness at great cost shatter the hold of human nature, rattling it to the core. A hint of something better.

It would be wonderful for there to truly be a change in the whole world and not just in small parts at a time when it comes to peace and love and everything (Beauty pageant contestant: World Peace!), but at the pace we’re going, I can’t help but be cynical about that. The only plus side is, we haven’t all annihilated each other yet. 🙂 And of course there are, as you said, occasional outbursts of goodness that leave us with hope. 🙂

    But yes. Great insight. 🙂

Oh, and I’ve nominated you for the One Lovely Blog Award: I don’t even really know what I’m doing. I’m just visiting blogs I think are awesome. So yes. :))

    • Outbursts of goodness are certainly happy things- no matter how small. Let’s aim to be part of making them more frequent on planet earth… Thanks for the nomination- you’ve got some cool blogs listed in your 15 on your page!
